A new gateway to campus
The campus vineyard, adjacent to the Robert Mondavi Institute complex of buildings, was planted in 2011. This vineyard houses the student rotation block where Department students plant, establish and train vineyards on a variety of trellis/training systems; the Wendell Jacob trellis demonstration; a collection of 150 varieties from around the World; 4 acres of production blocks that include a selection of Petite Sirah clones; and an organic, dry-farmed block with a 1920s blend Zinfandel, Mataro, Carignane, Petit Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. This vineyard will also contain blocks to teach grapevine identification so that all of the viticulture teaching can be done “right outside the back door”.
