Brad Webb died in 1999 at age 77. He was an influential winemaker at Hanzell Vineyards and a founding partner of Freemark Abbey Winery. His brother, A. Dinsmore Webb, served on the V&E Faculty for many years. The brothers began their foray into the world of beverages by making root beer in the family kitchen. In 1982, Webb was honored with the American Society of Enologists Merit Award. A soft-spoken and introspective man, Webb lived with Parkinson's Disease for many years and remained an active participant in the Napa Valley wine community until his passing.
The Brad Webb Scholarship was started by his family and friends to honor his memory.
"I can think of no more appropriate way to honor the memory of my brother than to help younger persons become successful wine growers."
A. Dinsmoor Webb.
