Louis P. Martini Endowed Chair Fund

Louis P. Martini Endowed Chair in Viticulture Department of Viticulture and Enology Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

The Louis P. Martini endowment began as a research fund in 1994 to honor Louis P. Martini on his 75th birthday. The fund originated in 1989 by the Martini children, Carolyn, Michael, Peter, and Patricia as a surprise gift for their father. Well-wishers added to the fund during the birthday celebration.

Leon D. Adams Scholarship

Leon D. Adams was a wine historian by title, but he was also a sharp wine judge and great wine writer. Many considered Adams to be the "Dean of American wine writers." Adams penned two seminal volumes on wine: Wines in America and The Commonsense Book of Wine. He firmly believed that Americans should drink wine with meals, and further believed that America would not become of age as a wine drinking nation until wine became as cheap as milk. Adams passed away in 1995, at the age of 95.

The Domaine Carneros Le Rêve Scholarship Award

The Domaine Carneros Le Rêve Scholarship Award is to be awarded to a student of good standing pursuing a graduate degree in the Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis. The student should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, demonstrate financial need, and be committed to promoting diversity and/or sustainability in the wine industry.

LC Jacobson

L.C. Jacobson teamed up with Del Webb in 1938. The two ex-carpenters took on jobs nobody else had tried and quickly gained a reputation for building them well and finishing them fast. The two ended up completing the construction on “Bugsy” Siegel’s Flamenco Hotel in Las Vegas. Jacobson served as the president of Del Webb Corporation from 1962 to 1966, and it was Jacobson who put their corporation into the gambling business. A 1965 interview in Fortune Magazine quotes Jacobson as enjoying shooting dice and then deciding that it was time to get some of his money back!

Knights of the Vine Scholarship

The Brotherhood was established in 1964 by Norman E. Gates. Gates followed the philosophy of ancient wine brotherhoods by honoring wine, country and mankind. It was his goal to create an organization to unite those people who produce wine, those who sell it, and those who appreciate it. Mr. Gates, who is now deceased, retired in 1995 at the age of 76. Michael D. Doukas followed Gates and led the Brotherhood until 2006. Upon Mr. Doukas’ retirement, L. William Hegland was elected the new Grand Commander, taking over on June 1, 2006.

John Ferrington Award in Enology

John Thomas Ferrington passed away on May 20, 2001 at the age of 38. He received his degree in Viticulture and Enology in 1988. He was recognized by his colleagues as an accomplished grapegrower and winemaker with a finesse for crafting Pinot noir. Ferrington was fluent in four languages and completed a master's level studies at Montepellier, France at the Ecole de viticulture et Enologie.

Jack Neal & Son Viticultural Studies Scholarship

In 1968, Jack Neal opened a vineyard management company out of his home on Mee Lane in Rutherford with the goal to provide top quality farming and vineyard management the throughout Napa County area. In 1994, after working in his father's business since early childhood, Mark Neal became the owner and manager of Jack Neal & Son (JNS).
